Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu lets you neutralize a bigger, stronger opponent. Here's why so many beginners are getting hooked.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, commonly known as BJJ, is a ground-based martial art that focuses on grappling, positional control and submissions. Often called "human chess", BJJ is built on the principle that a smaller, weaker person can defeat a larger, stronger opponent through technique, leverage and timing. There is no striking in BJJ — no punches, no kicks. The emphasis is entirely on control and submission.
BJJ was popularised through the UFC, where Royce Gracie — a relatively small fighter — used BJJ to defeat much larger opponents in the early days of mixed martial arts. Today, BJJ is practised worldwide both as a standalone discipline and as a core component of MMA training.
Many people hesitate to try combat sports because they are afraid of getting hit. BJJ eliminates that concern entirely. There is no striking. You learn to control positions, execute sweeps and apply submissions — all through technique rather than force. This makes BJJ uniquely accessible to beginners, including those who have never done any sport before.
At Davinci Fighting in Evere (Chaussee de Haecht 1133, 2 minutes from Bordet Station, Tram 55), BJJ classes welcome complete beginners every session. Professional coaches break down every technique step by step and pair newcomers with experienced training partners who guide them through drills patiently.
BJJ is widely considered the most effective martial art for real-world self-defense. Statistics show that the majority of street confrontations end up on the ground. BJJ gives you the tools to control that situation — to neutralize an aggressor without necessarily causing serious injury. You learn to take someone down, establish a dominant position and apply a submission hold that forces them to stop.
This ability to control without striking makes BJJ particularly valuable for people who want self-defense skills but do not want to throw punches. It is also the reason why BJJ is taught to law enforcement and military units worldwide.
A typical BJJ class at Davinci Fighting follows this structure:
BJJ sessions at Davinci Fighting are held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 20:15 to 21:45.
BJJ is often described as addictive, and for good reason. The intellectual challenge of grappling — reading your opponent, planning two moves ahead, solving problems in real time — engages the mind in a way that few other physical activities can match. Many practitioners describe BJJ as the most effective form of stress relief they have ever found. For the duration of the class, daily worries simply disappear.
The comparison with other combat sports shows that BJJ stands out for its mental engagement. It builds patience, humility and the understanding that technique always beats brute force — lessons that translate powerfully into everyday life.
