Your First Combat Sports Class in Brussels

First combat sports class? It's totally normal to feel nervous. Here's exactly what to expect and how to prepare.
Combat sports disciplines at Davinci Fighting Brussels — what to expect at your first class

Before you arrive: what to bring

Preparing for your first class at Davinci Fighting is simple. You do not need any special equipment or prior training. Here is everything you need:

  • Clothing: Comfortable sportswear — a t-shirt, shorts or leggings. For BJJ, long sleeves and trousers are recommended (a rash guard if you have one, but not required).
  • Water bottle: Stay hydrated. Combat sports training is intense.
  • Towel: A small towel for wiping sweat.
  • Equipment: Gloves, shin guards and other protective gear are provided by the gym for your trial session. No need to invest before you know which discipline you prefer.

The gym is located at Chaussee de Haecht 1133 in Evere, 2 minutes from Bordet Station (Tram 55). Arrive 10-15 minutes early to meet the coaches and get settled.

Choosing your first discipline

Davinci Fighting offers four disciplines. Not sure which one to try first? Here is a quick guide:

  • Boxing: Best if you want to start simple. Punching techniques, footwork and defence. Great for stress relief and cardiovascular fitness.
  • Kick Boxing: Like boxing but with kicks. More dynamic and slightly more physically demanding. Excellent for weight loss.
  • MMA: The most complete discipline. Combines striking and ground fighting. Ideal if you want to learn everything.
  • BJJ: Ground-based grappling. No striking. Perfect if you prefer technique over power, or if the idea of getting hit makes you hesitant.

You can always switch disciplines later or subscribe to the premium plan to access all four. Your free trial class lets you test any one discipline.

What happens during the class

A typical class at Davinci Fighting follows this structure:

  • Warm-up (10-15 min): Mobility exercises, light cardio, stretching. The coach brings everyone together and sets the pace.
  • Technique (25-35 min): The main part of the class. The coach demonstrates techniques and you practise them with a partner. As a beginner, you will be paired with an experienced member who helps you learn.
  • Drills or conditioning (10-15 min): Practical application of the techniques through controlled drills. Intensity is adapted to your level.
  • Cool-down (5 min): Stretching and group feedback.

As a first-timer, you will never be asked to spar. Everything is controlled and progressive. The coaches at Davinci Fighting are professionals who have trained beginners as well as fighters preparing for the UFC and Glory.

Common fears (and why they are unfounded)

Every single person who walks into a combat sports gym for the first time shares the same concerns. Here are the most common ones:

  • "I am not fit enough": You get fit by training, not before training. Coaches adapt every exercise to your current level.
  • "I will look ridiculous": Everyone started as a beginner. The culture at Davinci Fighting, rated 5/5 on Google, is built on mutual support, not judgement.
  • "I will get hurt": Beginners do not spar. All exercises are controlled. Safety is the top priority.
  • "I am too old": Members range from children to adults in their 50s and beyond. There is no age limit for starting combat sports.

After your first class

After your free trial class, there is absolutely no pressure to commit. Take your time to decide. If you enjoy the experience, Davinci Fighting offers flexible subscriptions starting at 49 EUR/month for one discipline or 79 EUR/month for all disciplines.

Members come from across Brussels — Evere, Schaerbeek, Woluwe-Saint-Lambert, Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, Haren and Saint-Josse-ten-Noode. The welcoming community is what makes people stay.
